Horseback Riding Information

It there a better place in the world for pack trips? When you consider the spectacular scenery, boundless wildlife, unlimited trails and destination hot springs, I think not. Darby Canyon, two miles from Darby Ranch, is one of our family’s favorite trail rides. We can ride directly from the barn and the scenery is wonderful. There are creeks to cross, high alpine valleys, mountain sheep on the canyon walls, even two connected caves over a mile apart for the adventurous to explore. Some of our neighbors claim to have seen Grizzlies, Wolfs, even Big Foot in Darby Canyon.

It would take a lifetime to ride all the local tails. They extend into three states, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho and two National Parks, Yellowstone and Teton. A pack trip into the National Parks is a once in a lifetime experience, but not to be taken lightly as your chances of running into a Grizzly or Wolf pack are surprisingly good. Once hunting season begins, local packhorses often find themselves on Elk hunts in the surrounding mountains.

Most local horsemen are either trail riders or ride rodeo events. Roping and barrel racing are particularly popular. The ropers and racers prefer Quarter Horses and the trail riders seem to prefer gaited horses. Our outdoor arena and round pen are very useful for training both, and   beginning riders as well.
