The Jackson Airport lies 40 miles
to the east inside Teton National Park. The Idaho
Falls Airport is 70 miles to the west. Both are nice
little regional airports serving major carriers.
The reason we’ve listed airports
in this section is the Driggs Airport. It’s private
but it’s a gas. One of the best restaurants in the
area, Warbirds, takes up most of the space. We love
to come for brunch in the summer, sit outside next
to the runway and watch all the private jets land
and take off. Inside, next to the restaurant, is a
hanger filled with retired war planes, both prop and
jet, they belong to valley residents and are parked
in a museum setting, hence the restaurant name. Once
a year the plane owners take all the local kids up
for a spin in these special planes, we go every
year.
The airport also offers glider
flights and small plane flights over the Grand
Tetons. Maybe we’ll try a glider flight this summer.
This must be a good place for gliders as it is lousy
with hot air balloons all summer long. I’m not sure
how hot air balloons race but they have a big one
every Forth of July. |
